Diabetes
If you have been diagnosed with diabetes then you are at a higher risk of developing problems with your feet. Ulcers, a loss of feeling and a poor blood supply are some of the common foot conditions associated with diabetes.
It’s essential you check your feet on a daily basis for infection, typically indicated by redness in the foot or leg or if the foot feels warmer than usual, changes in skin colour, swelling and breaks in the skin. Also be aware of unexplained pain.
Anyone who has diabetes should have their feet examined at least once a year by a healthcare professional, such as a podiatrist. If you smoke, have high blood pressure and/or cholesterol then it’s important to have your feet checked more frequently to avoid unnecessary complications.
